In this issue, Sue Thomas, Nurse Policy Advisor for the Royal College of Nursing, identifies a change to the way in which nurses practise and how care is now delivered to some patients (p. 481). While the introduction of new ways of working and innovation to service provision is to be welcomed, we must keep in mind whether ‘SMS nursing’ will be beneficial to all our patients. One way in which it has been suggested that text messaging may be used is as a reminder service for people to take medication. Many patients with long-term neurological problems are elderly and do not own a mobile phone, so a service which sends text messages to remind them to take medication for example, would not be helpful.
