The antiphospholipid syndrome was first described in 1983 by Graham Hughes, from the Lupus Unit at St Thomas's Hospital in London (hence its alternative name ‘Hughes syndrome’). It is now considered a major neurological disease and one of the most significant syndromes to affect neurology practice in recent years (Hughes, 2003).
