Stem cells have been hailed as a possible cure for a number of neurological conditions including Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease, spinal injury and stroke. Reports of developments in stem-cell research regularly attract interest and controversy. The latest concerns relate to the use of combined human and animal stem cells in research, which is currently under review. While attitudes to stem-cell research in the UK are perhaps more liberal than in the USA, for example, there is always a danger that researchers will go too far in searching for sources of stem cells.
