The population of the UK is ageing. There are regular reports in the media about how this is affecting our society. We have seen changes to the retirement age, as people are living longer and staying healthier, to reduce the burden on pensions. We also need to consider the impact that this ageing population is going to have on health-care provision. One good example of where this may have an impact is on the number of people having strokes. We know that stroke is predominantly a condition of older age and that the majority of stroke patients are over the age of 65 years. As the population ages, the number of people having strokes will continue to increase, putting an added demand on already stretched resources.
