Many of you will have seen a BBC news report on 20 November about a 53-year-old woman who was to be prescribed zolpidem to try to wake her up from a persistent vegetative state (PVS) against her family′s wishes (BBC, 2006). Zolpidem is a GABA agonist, normally used to treat insomnia, which has been reported to have roused three patients from PVS (Clauss and Nel, 2006). The family is in favour of withdrawing the woman′s enteral feed and allowing her to die, rather than to be left with the potential of serious disability, even if the drug has an effect in her case.
