The National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) first issued guidance on the use of donepezil, galantamine and rivastigmine in January 2001. The recommendation was made that these three anticholinesterase drugs could be prescribed for all people with mild and moderate Alzheimer's disease via the NHS, but only if their Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE) score was above 12 points. This guidance is under review and a revised guideline was expected to be published in January 2006.
