If you managed to catch the recent documentary ‘Your Life in Their Hands’ on BBC1 (27 July 2005), you will have witnessed a fascinating area of paediatric neurosurgery. The programme showed paediatric neurosurgeon Chris Chandler and his colleagues, based at King's College Hospital in London, pioneering a new approach to treating childhood epilepsy. They perform surgery as early as possible in children with intractable epilepsy to avoid problems associated with chronic seizures and long-term drug therapy. Harry Davidson, aged 7, had suffered epilepsy for 3 years and the programme followed his progress after surgery to have a large area of his temporal lobe removed. The previous orthodoxy would have been to leave him on medication and suffering from regular seizures. This would mean a constant disruption to his life, affecting schoolwork and his ability to maintain relationships with his peers. The result, according to his parents, is ‘a miracle’.
