Staffing levels and skill mix have long been of concern to neuroscience nurse managers and specialist nurses working in this field. Recommendations for the nursing workforce are contained in the Neuroscience Critical Care Report (Modernisation Agency, 2004). Many neuroscience units, however, are not staffed according to these recommendations, with vacancies being filled by bank and agency staff without specialist neuroscience knowledge and skills. On top of this, neuroscience nurses are now grappling with implementation of Agenda for Change.
