Book Reviews

British Journal of Neuroscience Nursing · 2005

This book is intended for speech and language therapists. Nevertheless it should be useful for nurses and other professionals involved in the care of patients with dysphagia. The book is divided into thirteen chapters and has four appendices. Individual chapters take the reader through the normal swallow, assessment, management of dysphagia and some complex issues like tracheostomy and the ventilated patient.Other chapters deal with nutrition, legal and professional issues, health and safety, ethical decision-making and training. The appendices have a list of websites, suppliers, easy-to-swallow foods and a very useful section containing guidelines, monitoring forms and protocols. A section of further reading concludes the book. It is a British publication and therefore relates well to a British readership. It is a very practical book and presents information in a clear and practice-oriented manner. The guideline and monitoring charts in the appendix can be photocopied and used as a bedside resource.
