An ideal spectral localization technique would excite the desired volume of interest (VOI) with the correct flip angles, and excite no tissue outside the VOI. However, the slice profiles of the three localizing RF pulses are not rectangular, and lead to a fall off in flip angles near the edges of the VOI.
