About 240 patients have been registered at The Middlesex Hospital, London, for AIDS and about one-third of these have had some symptoms indicating involvement of the nervous system. Over 50% of these patients have been subjected to computed tomography (CT) and, of these, 40% are normal, 40% show atrophy and 20% show focal pathology. Many of the radiological appearances are not specific, and confirmatory evidence of their nature is more frequently dependent on clinical evolution, response to therapy, serological testing and, occasionally, isolation of organisms, rather than biopsy or post-mortem histology, which is not commonly obtained.
