Superconductivity: Scientific Phenomenon to Engineering Reality

D Dew-Hughes · Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part C: Mechanical Engineering Science · 1988

This paper gives a brief description of the phenomenon of superconductivity and its early history, and then outlines what is required of a superconductor in order that it can be used in an engineering device. The development of practical materials to meet these requirements, with examples of applications, is then given. Finally, in the light of the recently well-publicized spectacular discoveries of new ceramic superconductors, the author speculates on their probable impact on engineering.
