Design of keyways with a view to avoiding fatigue failure is discussed in terms of pictorial stress flow, common loading cycles and comparisons of published data on stress concentration. A method for predicting the stress concentration factors in round-ended (end-milled) ISO-shaped keyways is put forward, including the effect of key length.
