Academic psychiatry: a key research asset is shrinking

Summary Academic psychiatrists play a key role in mental health research and help the UK to punch well above its weight internationally. However, over the past two decades there has been a progressive decline in the number of academic psychiatrists in the UK: there are now 31% fewer than there were in 2006. Reversing this trend is critical for the health of psychiatric research.
