Analysis of pressure pulsation in three-screw pumps

Shenrui Wang, Qingyun Sun, Longxin Li · Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part E: Journal of Process Mechanical Engineering · 2025

This article presents an introduction and in-depth discussion of the pressure pulsation characteristics of the three-screw pump. Experimental testing and numerical simulation were conducted to evaluate pressure pulsation at seven points, including the inlet and outlet. Particular attention was given to the conditions under two different pressure levels and rotational speeds. To validate the results, the experimental method was compared with computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations. Through flow field simulation and pressure pulsation experiments on the screw pump, the effects of rotational speed and operating pressure on internal pressure pulsation were thoroughly analyzed. Research shows that the pressure pulsation of a three-screw pump is most intense in the low-pressure zone. Moreover, the greater the pressure difference or the higher the rotational speed, the stronger the pressure pulsation and system instability caused by leakage flow.
