New information and communications technologies are rapidly changing work practices and work sites throughout the world. In the development of these technologies, the perspectives and concerns of workers need to be heard. Work-oriented design, based on field studies, can contribute to technologies that provide improved opportunities and conditions for workers. In so doing, however, work-oriented design necessarily confronts the reality of power struggles over the design of work.
