On the Need for Recordkeeping in the Practice of Psychiatry

Whatever the value of records in the practice of psychiatry as a treatment tool, there are now various record-generating pressures. Records are now being forced into existence where none were kept before. Quality assurance, accreditation, financial reimbursement, and legal purposes call for the keeping of records. This article explores the ritual and reality of recordkeeping in psychiatry.
