A retrospective study of 114 patients with adenocarcinoma of the stomach showed that the disease occurs more frequently after the sixth decade of life and is more common in males. The operative mortality was 10%. 53% of these patients had resectable lesions and 45% underwent curative resection. Results of subtotal gastrectomy compared favorably with total gastrectomy when carried out at the same stage of the disease. Palliative resection had some value, but chemotherapy and radiation therapy did not offer any benefit. The 5-year survival rate was 3.5%.
