The Genetic Control of Immunity and its Relationship to Carcinogenesis

The immune response is a complex process which can be (genetically) implicated in carcinogenesis by 2 routes: (1) change in DNA (by point mutation, virus-induction, crossover, or deletion) participating in the transformation of a cell from a normal into a cancerous one, or (2) environmental (immunosuppressant) changes affecting protein synthesis (i.e., immunoglobulins) resulting in an impaired surveillance mechanism and, thereby, enhancing the potential for neoplastic development. Experimental evidence linking specific genes to specific immune responses has been reviewed and related to cytoplasmic mechanisms working independently or in conjunction with nuclear mechanisms in immune protein synthesis.
