Patients with nonresectable and advanced malignant disease had marked suppression of delayed type of hypersensitivity to different antigens in vivo, and showed marked impairment of the response of their lymphocytes cultured in vitro with phytohemagglutinin. This suppression was significant as compared to hospitalized non-cancer patients. There were no differences in response to lymphocyte stimulation with PHA in different primary sites of the neoplastic diseases. Cytotoxic drug therapy enhances this inhibition of the lymphocyte transformation in vitro after challenge with PHA in all these patients regardless of their response to the above agents.
