This report describes the ultrastructural features of the various cell types comprising different gliomas of the human cerebral hemispheres, i.e. isomorphous oligodendroglioma, isomorphous astrocytoma and glioblastoma multiforme. Glioblastomas are distinguished from oligodendrogliomas and astrocytomas by a high degree of anaplasia and cellular pleomorphism. The oligodendrogliomas and the astrocytomas are fairly well differentiated gliomas. The ultrastructural characteristics of the glioblastomas support the classification as a glial neoplasm or more precisely as an anaplastic glioma. The ultrastructural observations substantiate the hypothesis that all gliomas are composed of a heterogeneous tumor cell population of glial nature with a shifting predominance of one or several types.
