Preliminary data on the relationship of mitosis to cell differentiation was obtained for tissues involved in the regeneration of the right forelimb of Triturus viridescens following pulse Cell cycle studies injections of tritiated thymidine. for connective tissue cells and blastema cells from 18 day limb regenerates revealed an S-phase duration of 30–55 hours and a cycle time of 45–60 hours for these two tissues. Grillo and Urso (1968) reported an S-phase duration of 55 hours and a cycle time of 75 hours for newt intestinal epithelium. Following the loss of an appendage, it appears that the newt accelerates its cell cycle mechanism mainly by decreasing S-phase, thereby rapidly replacing the missing organ.
