The part played by heredity in the genesis of childhood neoplasia was investigated by examining the relative frequency of leukemia and other childhood malignancies in a widely scattered ‘family’ of British descent. It was found that in Canada, England and Wales, and New Zealand, where there are slightly differing incidence rates of malignant disease the proportions of leukemia and the other common malignancies were constant. It is concluded that heredity may play a substantial and predictable role in determining the common types of neoplasm in some communities of children.
