Small molecule metabolites are not only the essential constituent in plants, but also play critical roles in development and stress responses. Till now most plant metabolites have not been characterized and their functions are largely unknown. However, with the recent development of analytical tools in combination with genetic and genomics, this area is in rapid development, as seen in this special issue (cover design: Ying Wang).
