Elective Surgery for Duodenal Ulcer

William Burnett, Hugh D. Baillik · Australian and New Zealand Journal of Surgery · 1968

A study has been made of the value of the augmented histamine test with medical vagotomy in pre‐selecting the most appropriate operation for any individual patient requiring elective surgery for duodenal ulcer. One hundred consecutive patients were studied. The selection procedure altered the otherwise preferred operation of vagotomy and gastro‐jejunostomy in only eight cases—five patients being treated by vagotomy and anirectomy and three by partial gastrectomy. The results are discussed, and it is concluded that the use of these tests as a preoperative selective procedure is unjustified.
