Summary An outline is given of some of the extremely heterogeneous operations that have been applied to the treatment of peptic ulcers. Special notice is taken of contributions by Billroth and his pupils, about whose lives brief notes are added. Incidental mention is made of the earlier history of intestinal suture. The fate of the operations is briefly shown.
