Summary The nature of the postural and functional defects associated with traumatic and inflammatory diseases of the pleura, their causes and their prognosis are described. The physiotherapeutic treatment termed “controlled breathing” is explained. The physiological principles underlying it and the method of teaching it are given in detail. It should be the basis of all physiotherapeutic courses for patients with surgical conditions of the chest. The management of the individual case is discussed from the physiotherapeutic point of view, together with nursing points and the results to be expected–namely, the return of the majority to “Al” health in two to six months.
