A New Look at Intravenous Urography

ABSTRACTIn spite of the advent of new imaging modalities, the simple intravenous urogram remains an important technique for the visualisation of the renal tract. It is also an examination in which an understanding of basic renal physiology is useful. The physiology is reviewed and against this background the differences in the examination when performed with low osmolality contrast agents are indicated. Comments are also made on the relative safety and costs of the examination when performed with these agents.
