Gastroschisis and Omphalocele Prenatal Ultrasonic Detection and its Significance

ABSTRACTGastroschises and omphaloceles are both conditions of extra abdominal gut herniation.An omphalocele presents ultrasonically as an extra‐abdominal mass, with a smooth margin surrounded by an echogenic membrane attaching to the umbilical cord at the apex of the mass. The condition is associated with a relatively high incidence of other congenital abnormalities.A gastroschisis is an extra abdominal mass, with a lobulated edge and without an echogenic layer. The mass is not related to the umbilical cord which lies in a normal position. The condition is relatively free from associated congenital defects.
