The Radiology of Ischaemic Colitis

SUMMARY Ischaemic colitis is at present the most widely accepted name for vascular disorders of the colon. While individual signs in plain films and barium enemas may suggest this disease, the most important radiological findings are the changes in the colon in serial barium enema examinations. The consideration of the clinical features and the barium enema findings together may make the diagnosis almost certain. Because ischaemic colitis may occur with or without demonstrable vascular occlusion, the place of arteriography in the management of this disease is doubtful.
