SUMMARY Minor modifications of the technique of barium‐air contrast colonic studies, as originated by Welin, are described in detail. The application of this technique in private radiological practice, in rooms remote from a hospital, is shown to be feasible providing that a room for bowel washouts and a toilet adjacent to the screening room are available. The preparation of the patient in the X‐ray department is stressed. It is considered that the cost of the examination is far outweighed by its greater accuracy. The longer time spent in the examination is negligible considering the accuracy of the diagnoses obtained. Typical conditions have been demonstrated. The early stages of ulcerative colitis are demonstrated better by this method than by the conventional examination. It would appear that polyps are far less common in Western Australia than in Sweden.
