Bovine brain cerebrosides were degraded to ceramides on a milligram scale, using a procedure by Carter et al. These were separated into the 2‐hydroxy acid and non‐hydroxy acid containing ceramides and subsequently according to degree of unsaturation of the constituent acids. Four groups of ceramides were obtained. Each group was separated into molecular species by gasliquid chromatography as the trimethylsilyl ether derivative. Structures of the molecular species were determined by mass spectrometry.
