Ownership and the harmonious team: barriers to developing the therapeutic nursing team in primary nursing

CHRISTOPHER JOHNS · Journal of Clinical Nursing · 1992

Summary The paper assumes the significance of the therapeutic team to enable staff in primary nursing roles to seek and receive support in working therapeutically with patients and to deal effectively with conflict that impairs this aim. Two particular phenomena, ownership and the harmonious team, are identified and described; these arc both derived from the impact of introducing primary nursing into traditional nursing teams that appear to act as barriers to establishing the therapeutic team in practice. The importance of understanding these phenomena is emphasized.
