Endemic cyanophages and the puzzle of phage‐bacteria coevolution

Otto X. Cordero · Environmental Microbiology · 2017

Summary A recent genomic analysis of Synechococcus cyanophages sampled for over 15 years reveals a remarkable pattern of stable phage population structure, highly reminiscent of the ecotype structure observed in bacteria and archaeal ecotypes. In this highlight I discuss the importance of this finding and the questions and opportunities it opens to learn more about the nature of phage‐bacterial coevolution in the environment.
