Co-creation of ethical microbiology assignments for undergraduate students anchored in antiracist pedagogy

Abstract Antiracist pedagogy is a teaching philosophy aimed at critically examining the interconnection between race, power, education, and one’s field of study. After participating in the Seminar for Transformation Around Antiracist Teaching (START) program at Brown University, an intergenerational biology team composed of a professor, doctoral student, and an undergraduate student developed new assignments covering broad topics in bioethics for an Introductory Microbiology course. Here, we share our process and perspectives on engaging students in the exploration of how the field of microbiology is deeply connected to history, society, and culture.
