Abstract Aim To examine the components of successful global surgery partnerships, focusing on empowerment, sustainability, and collaboration in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Method A review of global surgery partnerships was conducted, with consideration of relevant case studies. The analysis emphasised education, infrastructure, cultural sensitivity, and stakeholder engagement as key themes contributing to partnership success. Results A horizontal model of partnership, centred on education and training, enables local surgeons to provide improved care. The British Foundation for International Reconstructive Surgery and Training (BFIRST) collaboration with Tumbi Regional Referral Hospital in Tanzania demonstrated the importance of elevating local champions through training in congenital hand surgeries.
