Jeff Schell, a pioneer and leading figure in Ti plasmid‐induced tumour formation in plants, and in plant genetic engineering, died on 17 April 2003. His early days in Ghent, and the exciting discoveries about Ti plasmids, are related here by his colleagues from the Ghent University
