AbstractThis paper contains an overview of psycho‐oncology. A definition of this discipline and its aims is given. Advances in knowledge are described in the following areas: the psychological toll of cancer and its treatments, psychological factors affecting quality of life, psychological precursors of cancer, psychological prognostic factors and psychobiological research. Advances in clinical practice comprise the development and controlled evaluation of psychological therapy for cancer patients. Finally, some major challenges facing psycho‐oncology in the immediate future are listed.
