AbstractA proliferation and hypertrophy of astrocytes and their processes are characteristic in inflammatory diseases of the brain. The mechanisms leading to this astrocytic reaction and the functional meaning of this response are unknown. This article reviews the evidence that by their ability to respond to lymphocyte‐derived growth factors and to secrete immunoregulatory molecules, astrocytes may participate in immune responses in the central nervous system.
