A fluorescence photomicrograph of neurons in a flat mount of the retina, stained green for tyrosine hydroxylase (dopamine neurons) and red for melanopsin, which is found in retinal anglion cells that sense illuminance (e.g., drive the pupillary light reflex) rather than contributing to formed vision. In patients with Parkinson disease, the diffuse dopaminergic innervation (small green boutons) across the retina and the specific inputs to the melanopsin neurons are disrupted.
